Ferret Line

Traditionally a ferret line is 10 or 12 yards of cord which is attached to the collar of a liner—a big, bossy, antisocial ferret whose job it is to go down into a warren to find any ferret that's laid up with a kill. The liner (who normally lives alone) drives off the first ferret and then stays put. The warrener then digs out the liner, and the kill, by following the line down the warren.

We don't work our ferrets, but because our garden can't be easily ferret-proofed we find the ferret line to be useful for exercising them. We attach the clip on the line to the ferret's harness, attach the other end to a large metal stake in the middle of the lawn, then sit back with a large glass of wine while the ferret does what ferrets do—extend the holes in the lawn, dig up plants in the flower bed, finishing up by climbing up onto a lap for a cuddle and a treat.

The ferret line is made from 8 mm wide nylon webbing and is 10 metres long.
